FF:LJMedB33 Czech Reformation and the History of Ideas (autumn 2022)
The Czech Reformation was an influential intellectual and spiritual movement of the 14th and 15th centuries with the aim to reform the contemporary Church. Focusing especially on the primary literature, the course will show you how the most important social and ecclesiological topics (e.g. the Eucharist, sinful pope, Antichrist) were communicated by its representatives both in written and oral forms (sermons, letters, polemics, “quodlibets”, holding parades etc.). Moreover, we will take a look at literary and argumentation techniques that were used in negotiation with the opponents of the reformers and how the reform ideas were accepted or rejected in other medieval European lands, especially in Germany and Poland.
