GAČR EXPRO Observance Reconsidered: The Uses and Abuses of the Reform (Individuals, Institutions, Society) GX 20-08389X (2020‒2024)

The 15th century in Europe was as a period of reform responding to a critical situation in the Church. This project emphasizes the contrasts and parallels between the Catholic reform and that of the nascent stage of the European Reformation. In Central Europe, the spread of reform ideas and their confrontation with local efforts is best exemplified by John of Capistrano, the Observants and their diffusion in the region, and by Jan Hus and the Hussite-Utraquist tradition.

The project makes accessible important texts related to social and religious developments in Italy and Central Europe; it evaluates local and central sources of reform; and analyses the origins of social acceptance of the reform in the 15th and 16th centuries from a new perspective. Focal points of our team of international scholars are critical editions of primary sources as well as their analyses and interpretations in the broadest context.
